Derek St. Holmes

Growing up around Flint, Michigan I used to listen to the Bob Seger System, Grand Funk Railroad (from Flint), Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, MC5, Frijid Pink, Alice Cooper, Cactus, The Frost and Ted Nugent (Amboy Dukes) to name a few. Living in Flint, which is a little north of Detroit, it was also hard to escape the “Motown” sound at that time.

I remember in 1968 when my grandmother bought me my first “rock and roll’ album...Bob Seger System’s, Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man. Wow!!

I moved to Minnesota in 1975 to attend my second year of college at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. While in college one album (there were many) that I listened to many times was Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold” with Derek St. Holmes.

Well, on May 21st Derek St. Holmes came to St. Paul to play at Wilebski’s Blues Saloon. He played several songs from his days with Ted Nugent. His 1.5 hour set went by way too fast. Derek is back playing with Ted Nugent. I'll have to check the their schedule to see if they are coming back this way soon.

KIm..my first images from our "Strobist" shoot

On Sunday, 05-22-11, from Second Street Photography Studios held a modified "Strobist" (off-camera / small flash) photo shoot at out studio. We were hoping to be able to shoot outdoors, but the rain pretty much kept us inside. Little did we know at the time was the tornado that hit North Minneapolis was about a half mile away.

I did set up my Elinchrom RX600 monolights on out 16 foot white vinyl for shooting also.

Here are some images of Kim using one Nikon SB-900 speedlight with either a Honl snoot or grid. I used both in these images. Triggered with Pocket Wizard II.

I will post other photos from the shoot later. I have a busy week ahead, so I'm not sure when.

Faces Etc of MN/ May "Behind the Scenes" Shots

On Friday, 05-20-11, four of us from "Second Street Photography Studios" had another photo shoot with Faces Etc of MN. This time it was with the May MUA class. They were all great ladies!

Our plan was to meet at the school, then when the models were ready we would go outside to shoot. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate. It began to rain prior to the ladies getting their first look done.

I was able to get some "Behind the Scenes" shots while the MUA's worked on the models.

I was scheduled to shoot Julie's (MUA) model, Charell, first. When they were ready it was time to start.

All the "Behind the Scenes" shots were taken with a Nikon D700 with a Nikkor 50 mm 1.4 lens. Once the actual photo shoot started I used an SB-900 speedlight with a 28" x 28" Westcott Apollo softbox triggered with Pocket Wizard II.
