Pileated Woodpeckers (05-12-26)
On Tuesday, 05-12-26, I went back out to check on the Pileated Woodpeckers. It was a very windy and warm day which was nice, but I almost didn’t go out because it was also very sunny. This meant that any photos would have some harsh shadows.
The male was sitting on the nest when the female arrived. They changed places. The females behavior seemed a little different from the last time I went out. She seemed to focus more on the inside of the nest than looking around. She stuck her head and upper body in the nest about three times before climbing inside.
I’m guessing there’s more than just eggs now.
Once the female climbed in the nest I went over to the Northern Flicker nest. About 35 minutes later I heard one of the Pileated Woodpeckers make a call near their nest. I couldn’t see from my location, but the female probably came back to the nest and traded places with the male again.
